A Norwegian marine research vessel named RV Fridtjof Nansen will conduct a survey of fish resources and ecosystems in the Bay of Bengal, according to Fisheries and Livestock Advisor Farida Akhter.
From Aug 21 to Sept 21, a total of 26 researchers, including 13 scientists from different Bangladeshi institutions, will take part in the programme with the support of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), said the ministry on Tuesday.
“The fish resources harvested from the Bay of Bengal play a significant role in the country’s economic prosperity, food security and employment,” Farida said.
“Proper management of Bangladesh’s marine waters will strengthen this sector’s contribution to the national economy.”
She said the survey will analyse the number of small pelagic and mesopelagic fish, evaluate the species diversity of demersal fish resources, and assess the overall state of the marine ecosystem.
“Data will be collected on sea temperature, salinity, current dynamics, productivity, deep-sea circulation systems and climate change,” she added.
The research will also focus on microplastics, marine debris, oxygen minimum zones, carbon dioxide and ocean acidity, which will support effective policymaking to address the impacts of climate change in the future, according to Farida.
“The 2025 survey by this vessel will be a milestone in managing Bangladesh’s marine resources,” she said.
“The scientific data will help in conserving fish resources, ensuring sustainable fishing, adapting to climate change and protecting the marine environment. It will also increase the skills of Bangladeshi scientists and strengthen international cooperation.”
Marianne Rabe Knævelsrud, Chargé d’Affaires at the Norwegian Embassy in Bangladesh, said: “Norway has always supported Bangladesh in sustainable fisheries management and marine research. The information collected by the research vessel will further strengthen the friendship between the two countries and contribute to global food security.”
FAO Representative in Bangladesh Jiaoqun Shi said, “With the support of the Norwegian government, this FAO-led research will help Bangladesh take science-based decisions. It will ensure sustainable fisheries management, which is essential for both national and global food security.”
