Bulgarian polar researchers are participating in the 12th Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) Open Science Conference, which opened on Monday in Oslo, the Bulgarian Antarctic Institute (BAI) announced.
The 2026 edition is being held under the auspices of the Norwegian Polar Institute (Norsk Polarinstitutt) and is under the motto “Diving into Antarctic Science – Making Waves for the Future”. Over 1,400 leading scientists and researchers from around the world are participating in the academic forum to discuss critical changes in polar ecosystems.
Bulgaria is represented by a delegation composed of scientists and experts from the National Center for Polar Studies at Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” and from BAI. The delegation is headed by Prof. Christo Pimpirev, head of Bulgaria’s Antarctic expeditions, and also inclides Assoc. Prof. Borislav Alexandrov, Assoc. Prof. Marina Stefanova, Assoc. Prof. Lyubomir Kenderov, Dr. Gergana Georgieva, Assoc. Prof. Vessela Evtimova, Dragomir Mateev, Dr. Rositsa Yaneva, Dr. Petar Sapundzhiev.
They will participate in multidisciplinary discussions and present scientific reports on the national Antarctic expeditions to the St. Kliment Ohridski base on Livingston Island, BAI said.
Last week, a Bulgarian delegation participated in the 38th General Meeting of the Council of Managers of National Antarctic Programs (COMNAP) in Tromso, Norway. The meeting discussed issues related to coordination and mutual assistance in logistical and scientific activities in Antarctica and the safety of work in these harshest polar conditions on Earth.
