Justice Minister Knut Storberget says he plans to expel more asylum seekers who have been denied asylum in Norway. More than 17,000 asylum seekers arrived in Norway in 2009, 2700 more than in 2008. Last year, those who were returned to their homeland were mostly asylum seekers from Iraq, but the Justice Minister says asylum sekers from another seven countries may be forcibly expelled in future.

Storberget says the new, stricter Norwegian asylum policy is having an effect, but says he is sure that he will be even more strict in enforcing the policy in future.
In a letter to the Norwegian Justice Minister, the UN High Commissioner for Refuges (UNHCR) has criticised Norway for disregarding UN advice when 30 Iraqi asylum seekers were returned to their homeland last December.
In the letter the UNHCR says this sends a poor signal to other countries. Even though their application for asylum had been denied, the UNHCR is against returning them forcibly to Baghdad and other central provinces in Iraq. This advice was ignored by Norwegian authorities.
