Norwegian Foreign Minister condemns attack on the Israeli Embassy in Cairo
[11.09.2011, 11:04am, Sun. GMT]
Norwegian Foreign Minister Støre condemns the attack on the Israeli Embassy in Cairo late Friday night and early Saturday morning, during which several people were killed. “The attack on the Israeli Embassy in Cairo last night is very serious. Norway condemns the violence and the violation of embassy premises and deplores the loss of life,” said Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.
He points out that Egypt has an obligation under the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations to protect the premises of the Israeli Embassy.

“I trust that the Egyptian authorities are aware of this obligation and expect them to take the necessary steps to restore the embassy’s security,” said Mr Støre.

The Israeli Embassy in Cairo was attacked by protesters during the night. There are reports that several people have been killed and more than 1.000 injured in clashes between the protesters and the security forces. The Israeli Ambassador and most of the embassy staff have left Egypt.
