|In a bizarre twist to the custody case of the children of an NRI couple in Norway, the father of the children has told authorities that he wants them to stay on in the country. Anurup Bhattacharya, along with his wife Sagarika, have been fighting for the custody of their two children, one-year-old Aishwarya and three-year-old Abhigyan, who have been under foster care since May last year. This was done after child welfare officials in Norway decided that the parents were negligent. But now Mr Bhattacharya wants the children to remain only under the custody of the Norwegian government. He has informed authorities that he has been physically abused by his wife and fears that the custody of their children might be handed over to her if they return to India. This given Indian laws that favour the mother being granted the custody of children who are below the age of five years. Mr Bhattacharya also informed the Norwegian authorities that he has already filed for divorce.|
The uncle of the children, Arunabhash Bhattacharya, has also expressed his unwillingness to be their guardian, according to sources. The Norway Child Welfare Services had recommended granting the custody of the children to him. Arunabhash, a young dentist from West Bengal, had been undergoing training sessions by the child welfare officials to position him as the children's guardian.
A court in Norway, which is hearing the custody case, is yet to give its verdict on the matter.
