| Tom Tyrijhell, Norway's Ambassador to Nicaragua, said on Friday that the international community expects that the government of Daniel Ortega reveal the millionaire assistance received from Venezuela. Ortega has not accounted for such aid before the Nicaraguan Congress. Tyrijhell, who is the President of the Group of Donors, said that the governments providing aid to Nicaragua have also asked Ortega to show signs of democratic will, following the allegation of electoral fraud in the municipal elections held in 2008. |
"We want that our funds, just like the funds from other donors, whether from Venezuela or other Southern countries that are providing aid to Nicaragua, can be made transparent, known by everybody, and under democratic control," the European diplomat said in an interview with Nicaraguan newspaper La Prensa, DPA reported.
The Norwegian ambassador said the he had read about the complaints of opposition parties, which accused the Nicaraguan government of managing Venezuelan aid through private companies linked to the Ortega family.
