Norway Foreign Minister on Arctic sales trip
[06.01.2012, 11:53am, Fri. GMT]
Jonas Gahr Støre is in Texas enlightening American oil companies about opportunities in the frozen “land of opportunity”. Hoping his High North sales patter will lift off in Houston, he tells Aftenbladet, “many people are unfamiliar with this area, and there’s a lot of speculation regarding the possibilities there. Our strategy is to inform them about the region’s realities.”Almost 140 Norwegian businesses are represented in the Houston area, most are oil and gas or financial sector companies. Norwegians number approximately 7,000.
Houston an important hub

“Houston is one of the most important Norwegian business hubs in the world. It’s important, therefore, to visit and devote a little attention to this part of Norwegian business life,” the Foreign Minister declares.

Mentioning one important problem, however, he continues, “We must also be aware of our climate and environmental challenges. We cannot continue with business as usual if we don’t make substantial emissions cuts.”

Foreign Minister Støre will also be participating at a Norwegian-American Chamber of Commerce business event and a panel discussion on current international issues at think-tank the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy.

In addition, he will address delegates at the World Affairs Council of Houston about energy development in the Arctic.
