Swedish court finds editor of AsianTribune website guilty
[15.05.2010, 12:21pm, Sat. GMT]
Swedish NORRTÄLJE Crown Court has found Asian Tribune website editor guilty in defamation case filed by Norway based Asian journalist Nadarajah Sethurupan (Sethu). The court has ordered Asian Tribune to pay 125, 000 Swedish Kroner for Sethu whose professionalism was called into question by the stories published in Asian Tribune. The court has ordered The World Institute of Asian Studies and Rajasingham to pay damages with interest, declared that Nadarajah Sethurupan is entitled to compensation for financial losses (amount to be determined later), ordered The World Institute of Asian Studies and Rajasingham to publish on the front page of www.asiantribune.com
A link to the judgment and to an authorized translation of the judgment (the substantive parts of the judgment) and to ensure the publication of an authorized translation of the judgment (the substantive parts of the judgment) in a newspaper in Sri Lanka.

The obligation to publish on website and in newspaper is within 14 days and 30 days respectively from  the date when the judgment is finally decided upon (after possible appeal). The judgment may be appealed no later than June 2, 2010.

The court gave its verdict last Wednesday. The prosecution had claimed that the articles published on Asian Tribune claiming Sethu was a member of the LTTE and that he worked for the group were scandalous and were causing damage to the journalist's reputation and also placing him and his family in danger in Sri Lanka.

Nadarajah Sethurupan asked from the Swedish and other involved governments to give protection from elements that may have misidentified him from the vilification stories.
