Heavy rains and melting glaciers prompted officials to post new flood warnings in western Norway on Thursday. The counties of Sogn og Fjordane and Hordaland were bracing for new flooding, as rivers fed by the glaciers threatened to overrun their banks. Flooding already was occurring around the Nigards Glacier on the eastern side of the Jostedal Glacier, and at the Bøya Glacier.More rain is predicted in the area during the next few days. Colder temperatures meant some of the precipitation may fall in the form of snow at higher elevations. Bergen was hit by flooding on Wednesday, as an unexpectedly heavy downpour lashed the west coast city. Several streets were under water, as were garages and cellars. Geologists were called in to check the stability of hills around several residential communities. Aftenposten English Web Desk/NTB |
