| “I am deeply concerned about the severe sentences handed down against local and international representatives of NGOs in Egypt, including one Norwegian,” said Minister of Foreign Affairs Espen Barth Eide. “The sentences and the trial show a very worrying trend for civil society in Egypt. Suzann Pettersen, Norway's best golfer on the pro circuit, was back home this week to play on Norwegian soil for the first time in a year. Pettersen needed to fight off a bit of jet lag, after playing in Sweden two weeks ago, heading straight for Edmonton in western Canada and then back to Oslo. "I'm trying to get back into a normal daily rhythm," she told Aftenposten's web site Golf.no. "I've had two days with normal sleep, no problem." |

| [Norwaynews] [31.08.2007, 12:08am, Fri. GMT] |
Thousands of people in northern Norway were left without telephone and internet connections earlier this week after a clumsy moose destroyed a switching station. A month before moose-hunting season kicks in, one of the so-called "kings of the forest" launched a coincidental pre-emptive attack, hitting man where it hurts the most and disrupting his tools of communication. The moose apparently ravaged the outdoor box containing key switching equipment on Tuesday, cutting telecommunications service to thousands of people in the district of Sør-Helgeland. The accident cut telephone and broadband connections over a wide area, reported Norwegian Broadcasing (NRK). |

| [Norwaynews] [30.08.2007, 11:13pm, Thu. GMT] |
| Shares of offshore driller Noble fell more than 4% today after the company said US supermajor Chevron put an early end to a contract for a rig in Nigeria. In its fleet status report filed with regulators today, Noble said Chevron had ended its contract for the jack-up rig Noble Roy Butler about four months early. "It had nothing to with rig performance or safety," John Breed, a spokesman for Noble, told Reuters. "It allows us to market the rig four months earlier with the goal of achieving a higher dayrate in a high rig demand period worldwide." |

| [Norwaynews] [17.05.2009, 09:05am, Sun. GMT] |
Every year on 17 May celebrations vary from place to place, but usually follow a traditional pattern that makes this the highlight of the year for most Norwegian children. A must in the celebrations are the children processions, made up of school classes marching with the school band through the local community. Most of the children carry small Norwegian flags and the route is lined with enthusiastic onlookers. Dressed in their best, the children then engage in games and activities, and for many this is the one day of the year when the supply of ice cream and hot dogs is endless.

| [Norwaynews] [31.08.2007, 12:09am, Fri. GMT] |
Ear protectors have become the latest accessory for employees at Opera Software in Oslo, but they're not eliminating headaches and nausea caused by noise from a neighbouring building site. Measuring 101 decibels, the noise in the office is equivalent to that at a nightclub. Employees at software company Opera Software in Oslo have complained of headaches and nausea in recent weeks. Construction work from the neighbouring building site, where the new condominiums known as Waldermars Hage are slowly taking shape, is making the noise level in the office unbearable for the workers, and it's now taking a toll on their health. Ear protectors have become necessary at Opera Software's office in Waldemar Thranes Gate, but they can only do so much. Anne Christiansen Stavnes, human resources boss at Opera Software, said the noise is making employees ill and becoming a major financial strain on the company. |
 | | | | Pressure grows on Norway's psychic princess |
| [Norwaynews] [30.08.2007, 11:36pm, Thu. GMT] |
| Calls were spreading on Monday for Princess Martha Louise to give up her royal title, to eliminate what's considered an inappropriate mix of her privileged position with her new controversial psychic venture. Even relatively conservative newspapers are criticizing the princess for "earning money on her princess title," as Bergens Tidende wrote in an editorial in Monday's editions. The newspaper, Norway's largest outside the Oslo area, also noted that "as a princess and theoretically an heir to the throne," Martha Louise "needs to relate to the rest of us others within a certain framework." The editorial questioned whether the princess' new business, in which she claims she will teach customers how to contact angels, is in line with the "rational" leanings of most Norwegians. |
